Connection & cooperation

The Netherlands & Kenya

The Netherlands and Kenya have maintained close ties for more than sixty years. Trade, entrepreneurship and cooperation connect the two countries.

State visit in March 2025

From 18 to 20 March 2025, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima paid a state visit to Kenya. The visit focused, among other things, on the economic relationship and cooperation between the two countries.

Cooperation agreements were signed during the visit, covering areas such as trade, agriculture and fisheries, tourism and security.

Agriculture: what does this mean for our coffee?

Around the state visit in March 2025, the Netherlands and Kenya strengthened their cooperation in sustainable agriculture and water. The agricultural agreements renew the framework of the joint agricultural working group, with a focus on knowledge exchange, innovation and cooperation between businesses and knowledge institutions.

Among the opportunities, the Dutch embassy mentions climate-resilient farming, smarter water use, better product quality and stronger trade chains. There is also attention for access to the European market for smaller businesses and women in agricultural chains.

For Coffeesisters, we see starting points here for knowledge and training among our coffee partners, more resilient cultivation in Meru and building sustainable trade relationships. We are exploring which contacts and initiatives fit our chain; no specific participation or support has been agreed yet.

Our connection with Kenya

With Coffeesisters, we shape the connection between the Netherlands and Kenya in our own way: through coffee, personal contact and attention to the people in the chain. From Kenya, Robert and Ad are working on the further development of the initiative.
